I have given up on the public education system after a long and life altering fight.  I now homeschool my son and how I wish he had a teacher like your husband.  He so longs for an intelligent, principled man to instruct him.

Our schools are permeated with the Christian Fundamentalists.

His students love him and his reviews have consistently been through the roof.  Apparently, every thing he did prior to this gig was in preparation for that one speech.   I can't tell you how proud I am of him... we've been together for 25 years.  He hasn't lost his passion OR compassion and after this attack, it's a given he won't any time soon. @;-)

You are homeschooling your son?  What a brave endeavor!  How old is your son?

I worked for the tiny, extremely corrupt local school district so I knew that he could never go to school there.  I homeschooled him from the beginning.

Our first year, we grew a garden.  You can teach a 4-5yo everything they need to know by growing a garden.  We divided it up into Old World and New World foods.  We grouped, counted, added, and subtracted seeds.  We measured seedlings and plants and charted their growth.  We gathered the foods and he took them to "market" driving his tricycle that pulled a wagon.  We learned the science of plants and the water cycle and the environment and best of all WORMS.  We had great fun.

Then my husband left which was no great loss because he did not contribute much.  However, I ran out of money I had saved before moving to the country and had to go to work.

My son endured 3 miserable semesters of public school before we decided it was too painful.

Things are uncertain and we take one day at a time.  He is largely responsible for his own learning.  I supply materials and make suggestion and an outline.  He does the work independently.

I am immeasurably proud of him!

In my opinion, there is so much about becoming a full, participating human being that needs to be taught to our young, that isn't taught.  That is, in fact, actively discouraged.

We teach them rote.  We teach them to fall in line.  We teach them to listen to others, and not their own hearts.

I am so happy to hear you're not doing that with your son.  The "Old World - "New World" garden was a wonderful idea.   :-)
