    Not money.

We've been over this every week since the endorsement.

What the Sierra Club "needs or wants" is Chafee's help as chair of a critical subcommittee...  He is singlehandedly stalling out the Republicans' attempt to gut the Endangered Species Act by refusing to bring a bill forward from his subcommittee, and refusing to commit to a vote in full committee.  This prevents the Senate from passing a bill to send to conference with the House (which already passed Pombo's bill).  If he can stall another couple of months, then it will be too late and Pombo's bill will die and have to be reintroduced in the next conference.

Similarly, Chafee's vote on Clear Skies produced a deadlock in committee that prevented Senate action on Bush's rollback of the Clean Air Act.

So....kos hates the endorsement as a matter of electoral politics....but as a matter of lobbying and thanking their "friends" it apparently makes sense to the Sierra Club (or whatever portion of the club ratifies endorsements).

I wish kos would quit frontpaging this --- but it clearly rankles him, and it's his blog.

But the "they have to be in it for the money" meme is not right...and in fact buys into the whole campaign that the right-wing has been running against environmental groups with Scaife, Koch, and  Bradley Foundation backing (and that Pombo himself put up on the House Resource's Committee's website on Earth taxpayer expense no less).
