  •  20 gauge shotgun. (6+ / 0-)

pump action.  not much recoil, easy to shoot, handy for varmits at close range. I wouldn't shoot at a skunk for anything, though. They shoot back if you don't kill 'em.  Use a trap.

Been trapping at those skunks for years, some fall for it but some get wise.  Municipality won't pick up the occupied traps any more.

and returns to eating the cat food.  We have got to get a step stool for that food dish.  :)

They're pretty smart. I don't imagine a step stool will help. That's a tough one.

I remember taking a bike trip to the UP and the Porcupine mountains. One night my buddy and I woke up to a noise out by the bikes. He whispered, thar be skunks on the bikes! I'm gonna chase em away.  I told him, don't be an idiot, just let em be. they're just looking for food.  He ran out and startled em and his bike got a good dousing. He had to ride that stinky thing all 500 miles back home as we were cutting it short on time and didn't have time to stop and wash it. I learned a healthy respect for the little devils that day!

Every major manufacturer offers a 20-gauge Youth Model that is slightly smaller than standard guns, which are sized to male dimensions. A pump shotgun is by far the gun you are least likely to have to use, because the sound of the action being cycled (pumped) is universally recognized by miscreants, and nobody wants to face a shotgun at spitting range.

You never need fancy buckshot or slug loads, field load #6 shot are absolutely lethal at inside-the-house range, but won't blow through multiple walls and hurt somebody by accident.

Learn how to use it and store it safely. Proficiency is determined by your ability to pick it up and prepare it to fire by feel alone. The best storage "condition" IMO is with a full magazine and empty chamber. To load and fire it you have to manipulate a slide release button AND pump the "slide", and release the safety, which is very hard for little hands to accomplish, and which process makes the gawdawful "cha-chunk" sound, much like a rattlesnake rattling.

The most effective firearm is the one that does the job without firing.
