I knew, after a while, that my Mom really regretted saying it. (At first, she denied she did say it but I could tell from the way she said it that she knew she did and she was just kind of hoping she hadn't.) Obviously, it's 36 years later and I've never forgotten. She's been dead now for 8 years and, after she asked me to explain to her what had happened at Kent after I became so heavily involved in the research, we never talked about it again. But it's still there.

In fact, a few years ago, my sister (kos's littlesky) and I were trying to figure out why I didn't go to my grandmother's 85th birthday ... and we finally realized that it was because it happened in March 1971 and I wasn't talking to my mother at that point and there was no way in hell I would have gotten in a car and ridden with her from West Virginia to New Jersey. To Mom's credit, she knew better than to ask at that point, too.

We need not stride resolutely towards catastrophe, merely because those are the marching orders. -- Noam Chomsky
