  •  I think I finally have the answer to my question (3+ / 0-)

For 36 years, I have had a question about a very famous photo from the news coverage (I believe it was Life Magazine) about the killings at Kent State.

In this photo there is a man in a business suit holding his pistol in the air, a gas mask tilted back on his head like the visor of a helmet.  I have thought that he was probably FBI.  But I think I was wrong.  I think that it was Canterbury, and he is clearly in command.

If anyone could link to that picture, I would appreciate it.

    •  I think he might be here... (2+ / 0-)

sixth from the right.  Sure looks like a suit with a gas mask on his head.  Sorry about the quality.

TarHeelDem .... there is another pretty famous picture of him hitting some guardsmen at the crest of the hill, trying to get them to stop shooting.

In any case, if you see someone at Kent in civilian clothes with a gun, it's either Gen. Canterbury or Terry Norman. One is old, one is young.

      •  Thanks (0+ / 0-)

But I believe the "fired" link has the picture I was thinking of.  I guess my bad memory invented the pistol in the air, or maybe there's another similar picture.

But, yep, sixth from the right is the same man.

        Is that Canterbury?

    •  Is this the picture you mean? (1+ / 0-)

found at, where that pics caption does say it is Brigadier General Robert Canterbury

      •  The guy with the suit? (1+ / 0-)

The guy behind the second and third guys on the front row?  The guy with the suit?  Yes, that is a picture from the same series but not the picture I mean.

See above for a link to a picture that is more like it.  In that picture the soldiers are aiming their rifles.

      •  oops, didn't do the link thing correctly, but (0+ / 0-)

there's another picture where the guy in the business suit is in the upper right, with guardmen arround and to the left of him, and he's still wearing the gasmask as a hat.

The guy at the front of all these soldiers with his hand (seemingly) on the guy's chest and a nightstick in the other is Major Jones. He's the one that almost certainly fired a .22 while they were down on the practice field (as a signal, that wasn't heeded, to fire? who knows? some suspect). Canterbury is also visible in this crowd of soldiers, towards the left side of the group of soldiers with the gas mask on his head and suit and tie visible. (This one was taken just after the one I reference above that shows Canterbury trying to stop the shooting.)

This also shows Sgt. Myron Pryor with gasmask and .45 under the Pagoda. He, I believe, started the shooting. He's visible in another photo linked in the diary for "rushed a few feet back to the crest of the hill, and opened fire."
