They were peaceful but very dramatic, and I'm certain they made a lot of people think.

For those that don't remember, a Die-in is a piece of street theater with a message that's hard to ignore, and it might have a place in this war's protests.  Here's how it worked.  If 95 US troops died in VietNam that week, and the weekly deathtoll was always featured in the news, 95 people would assemble in a prominant public place like in front of an big office buiding at lunch time, and on signal, they would all lie down and play dead for 15 minutes or so, while one or two accomplices would unroll a big sign that said 95 US troops died in VietNam this week.  Then, after 15 minutes, the dead would come to life, and simply walk away in all directions.

For a lot of startled onlookers, it brought home to them the reality of what that week's statistic meant in very human terms.

I think it was Stalin who said one man's dead is a tragedy, but a million deaths are just a statistic.

    •  hey! we had a die-in in 2003 in Laramie, WY (4+ / 0-)

Here are some pix from it. I thought it was a great idea for our peace group right after the Iraq War started. All the 20-30 yr olds looked at me with blank stares and said, "What's a die in?" When I told them, they were all excited about staging one.

Now I can go to bed.

By the way, I hope the MS is mild still, though with the profusion of text you produce, and the radiant enegy you exude, I guess, thankfully, that it is.

Be well, be happy, and be loved.

One of these times when I refresh there won't be any more new comments and I'll go to bed too. Luckily, I don't have to get up until I want to so I can stay and chat Kent for as long as I like.
