only when Leach retires. I have family in Iowa City. Liberal Democrats all of them. And all voted for Leach.

When he retires, the Dems can win it; after all, Kerry won it with what - 53, 55 percent? Until then, Leach is practically an institution by now.

I live in Iowa City, and a lot of the same people who voted for him last time are giving him sidelong looks now because he's been a little too eager to please his fellow Republicans by sucking up to Bush. His whole "maverick" image is fading fast.

If Loebsack can capitalize on that while defining himself (which he's been trying to do...) it could be surprisingly close. Leach is more vulnerable than he was.

I'm not optimistic, but I think we have a shot, depending on how much traction Dave Loebsack can get.

as on an icy night on the Benton Hill.

I'm in Iowa City too, and just today JL introduced a resolution about troop pull outs with Tom Harkin.
This is the pattern, drop some votes and photo-ops where he looks reasonable, and vote the give-aways to millionaires.
Dave seems a nice guy, but we need someone who can bring in the CR vote better. Is there a good Democratic state senator up there?

Actually I think we'd be better off getting him to party switch and I'd think he might start voting better on economic issues.
