    great diary.

Labor Day is supposed to be early in May-- as celebrated in many European countries.. but decades ago the clownservatives here insisted it be moved to Sept. 1-- after all, we don't want to be associated with the leftist/socialists in Europe who advocate things like worker's rights and fair pay.

Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States since the 1880s. The September date has remained unchanged, even though the government was encouraged to adopt May 1 as Labor Day, the date celebrated by the majority of the world. Moving the holiday, in addition to breaking with tradition, could have been viewed as aligning the U.S. labor movements with internationalist sympathies

feared that May Day would become a holiday commemorating the Haymarket and opted to move it to September where it had been previously celebrated by the Knights of Labor.

Cleveland, of course, showed his true colors during his second term as president when he ordered federal troops into Chicago to shut down the Pullman strikers.
