  •  Accountability, 1st principle of democracy (2+ / 0-)

from the very start in Athens. The Athenians had very elaborate procedures for holding politicians accountable. For example, there was an audit of their doings at the end of every term in office, in which any citizen was permitted to accuse them of wrong-doing; if there was any evidence for a charge, then they'd have to stand trial. The Athenian democracy also impeached politicians and generals fairly regularly for illegality or incompetence.

The Athenians put little stock in elections as a guarantee of democracy; they knew the rich and powerful could always manipulate elections. So they put their primary emphasis on retaining the means to hold politicians accountable. The U.S. needs to pay more attention to this principle.
