that's what immediately sprang to my mind. I pictured Europe in rubble in 1945, and how out of that rubble some strong, progressive states emerged.

And yeah, as bad as things are getting in the US these days thanks to the Bush Regime, we haven't been laid to waste like Europe in `45. Not yet, anyway.

But, I'm still feeling pessimistic these days. I can't help but feel like, even if we DO throw the bums out over the next two election cycles, even if Bush and his evil cabal are brought to justice... the damage is irrevocable. It's not as visible as a Europe in rubble, but it's there. I'm thinking of our economic future, the environment, and even the spirit of our people.

Hope I'm wrong, and I'm just being my usual curmudgeonly self.

    •  I think the spirit of the people is still strong (0+ / 0-)

but we need a LEADER. A real, visionary, LEADER.

Somebody who knows how to appeal to the BEST in us, not the worst. Somebody who knows how to TALK. Somebody who's not afraid to call people on their lies.

Somebody with some PASSION, who doesn't change his/her mind with every poll, but who can take advice and change when the FACTS warrant.

      •  I guess I just look at Americans today... (1+ / 0-)

and see a bunch of people who can be made to believe anything or agree to anything, as long as they've got cheap gas with which to power their f'ing SUVs as they go through the McDonalds drive-thru, on their way to shopping at Wal-Mart.

And the latest editions of "American Idol" and "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" to watch. And pretty white girls in danger on the "news" shows.

I look at my neighborhood and its discarded food wrappers and broken beer bottles accumulating on the ground, and wonder WTF is wrong with people.

I see us turning into a society with a small, powerful, wealthy, healthy overclass; and a huge underclass made up of people who are fat, suffer from asthma and other diseases caused by their living environment, are barely literate and one notch above functionally retarded (again, largely from their environment and aided by their substandard educations), and easily manipulated.

And it's like watching a car wreck in slow motion, unable to do anything about it.

Sorry, just in a bit of a funk lately.

    •  A significant difference - (0+ / 0-)

in post WWII Europe it was impossible to look around and believe everything was ok.  The trouble here is that there is little surface damage, but the infrastructure has been undermined.  It's hard to convince people it needs to be fixed.  "If it ain't broke..."
