    They have a huge graph of the entire population:  individuals are the nodes and phone calls are the edges.  

    They can identify who we connect to and how many and come up with a picture of every American's social network.  So, if someone peripheral to your social network (like the unemployed loser your sister dated a couple of years ago) goes down in a drug sting and you're less than n degrees from them in the network, they might gin that up to probable cause to investigate you.

    I'm pretty familiar with graph theory and network analysis from genomic biology, and it doesn't take much to imagine EXACTLY how NSA is mining this data.
