  •  hmmm, let me guess (0+ / 0-)

    Let me guess.

First off, these hearings won't be scheduled to take place for months.

That's step one in trying to quench these things.  Kill discussion by saying you are holding hearings, but wait so long to to it that the story is off the front page before they happen.

Second, the hearing will largely be someone like AG Gonzales up there spouting the Administration line.  So it will end up basically as a big PR platform for why the program is something we all need for our protection.

Third, the Democrats on the committee will be completely useless.  They may not show up to the hearing.  If they show up they'll be way to defferential to the Administration spokesperson.  And at best they'll mainly only be concerned about making themselves look good.

Ie, Specter's hearings in the past have just been part of the cover-up plan.

    •  Don't think I'm a big Specter fan. (0+ / 0-)

I'm not.  But from all appearances today, Specter is pissed.  He's promising to hold hearings on the NSA domestic surveillance programs in conjunction with the Hayden nomination.

Frankly, my impression of Specter is that he is by nature and personal political predilections more if a moderate, but he's vain as hell and cares more about his chairmanship than he does about his political predilections.  My impression (which I get largely from a 30-year observer of the Judiciary Committee) is that the leadership has him by the short and curlies, and every time he threatens to step out of line, they give them a sharp yank.

But I think these hearings will come off.  He's threatening subpoenas.  They're going to bring in the telco folks.  He's still resisting on bringing in Ashcroft and Comey, though.
