I pay $15/mo + some taxes that brings it to $16 and some change I think.  I only have the 500 minute plan because that's all I need.  911 does work where I live (and proven to work when I smelled a strong odor of smoke the other week and used it---turns out there was a fire nearby) but I also keep the local non-emergency number programmed into my phone just in case.

It's free to US + Canada, and pennies per minute for international.  I've never had any problems in over a year of being a subscriber and voice quality is quite good.

Vonage has all the goodies as well...voice mail, caller id + caller id call waiting, blocking, etc.

One your second quetsion, I don't know.

I switched to Vonage about a year ago and have the exact same 500 minute plan. I've never had any problems with it and have saved a lot of money (just getting local service without all the added features costs $30+ around here). It's great not having to worry about long distance charges and the web-based voicemail system is cool - you can set it up to email you a copy of any voicemail it receives. It doesn't use that much bandwidth either - on my cable modem I can have torrents downloading at 400k on my desktop, my wife can on her laptop browsing the web, and the phone can be in use at the same time without any noticeable effect.

      •  Web based (0+ / 0-)

I love the fact that it's web based and easy to use.

When we went to Vegas in Jan., we checked all our calls online.  We went to Santa Barbara a couple of weekends ago, I set up the callforwarding online.  We got our calls forwarded to our cell phones, like that!

        •  something else cool (0+ / 0-)

I've never tried this but supposedly you can take your router anywhere and plug it in and your phone line will work. Next time I travel I'm totally testing it out :)

          •  Scared to test it (0+ / 0-)

We plan on going to Kansas City and San Diego at the end of June.  I'd love to test it, but what if it does't work and we can't get calls from our clients who have no idea we're out of town?
