Let's not badmouth good ole Bakersfield.  What about the Utah salt flats or the Jersey Turnpike?  There's a couple of stretches of road that I'll never take kindly to.

A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.

    •  Oh I do feel you there... (0+ / 0-)

...but ive had some of THE worst trips on the 5 going between Sac and LA. Ive actually had better 12 hour drives than that 6 hour one. (But ive also had a 12 hour drive on it as well....Thanksgiving weekend of 2000). The salt flats were pretty uh.....flat for sure but the drive got pretty fun going through Salt Lake City (I was going east on 80 driving home from the military). Never been on the Jersey Turnpike but im sure its just like any other bullshit stretch of drive that you just dread making....

The New Jersey Turnpike is like nothing else that I've ever seen.  It's kind of like driving on a pretzel that has been dropped 20,000 feet and chewed by wolves.  And you're driving along that pretzel  with about 10,000 other people all trying to drive on it at the same time.  And none of them care about you.  And then you merge.

And then there are the bad stretches.

Just as a trivia point: there was, for a long time in New Jersey, a stretch of road that was both 95 and 295.  Same road.  Perfectly reasonable, right?  But if you got onto 95 North... you were on 295 South.  And then if you drove along it for a while, it would just... stop being 295.  And there was more of 295 to the North, but there was no particular way to get there...

That's New Jersey in a nutshell.

          EW.

        •  It's a way to get from here to there, minus (0+ / 0-)

the organization and pre-planned thought behind which communities and towns currently exist at the here or the there.

The NJ Turnpike represents sprawl's worst face in highway form . . . but, for those of us who have driven it for decades, it can be reasonably fast when you're just trying to get from the Northern end to the Southern end.  Anything else, and it's just all about inefficiency and obfuscation, I agree.  Years of pork and unbound suburban growth: perfect together!

So, please stay where you are. Don't move and don't panic. Don't take off your shoes! Jobs is on the way.

      •  I guess I'm some sort of a freak then (0+ / 0-)

but I actually really like driving I-5 through the central valley.

Of course when I have the time for it I do prefer to take 101... but I-5 has a certain meditative quality to it. There's lots of growing things. And I always marvel at the "crops grow where water flows" signs. Like, is there some big lobby out there against irrigation?

        •  It certainly does have that quality... (0+ / 0-)

...but im usually anxious to get where im going and the hundreds of miles of "flat and straight" are just an impediment. Although my absolute favorite drive is up the coast on PCH. Everyone needs to make that drive one time in their life. Ive never had so much fun in a car driving by myself. The drive from LA to SF along the coast is great...once you get about past Hearst Castle......
