  •  Getting past grief. (6+ / 0-)

My first reaction to this is just dull grief and a sense of powerlessness.

But how do you get past that - not get over feeling it when it's justified, but work for change?  I support organizing commemorative events on the anniversary (whether of the hurricane hitting New Orleans, or of some key point in the evacuation process) that both remind people of their rage and grief during that week or so and try to educate about the components of that tragedy - poverty, global warming, government cronyism and corruption.

But I also support focusing on this November's elections.  Not because we're going to see justice for Katrina survivors if some Democrats get elected (more likely to, but I'm not counting on it), but for oversight, for government competence, for avoiding repeats of this to the greatest possible extent.

If it's at all possible, just GO to New Orleans to support the city. Tourism is the lifeblood of its economy, and they need every dollar you can spend there.

Take time on your trip--even if it's just one day--to volunteer, whether with Habitat, ACORN, RHINO, or other groups.

Or just bear witness, as Delaware Dem has done so magnificently here.

Habitat is also making it possible for volunteers around the country to help. Check They have an initiative called Operation Home Delivery. You can help to frame and assemble parts of a house that will be shipped to the Gulf Coast.
