The workers who searched and cleared the WTC site performed that task with pride. They were turning volunteers away. Cleaning up and rebuilding were always assumed to be a national priority--it was a badge of honor to work on that site.

But, goddam it, why isn't it a major national priority to rebuild the Gulf Coast?

I lived in New York during 9/11, and the reponse was a ray of humanity in a very dark time--I still get choked up to think of the generosity, the gestures of support, the pride of the iron workers union who cleared the site in record time. And when I was in New Orleans, I felt so deeply, deeply ashamed at the comparison.

New Orleans is a great American city and a cultural and historic treasure. We ought to be mustering every resource at our disposal to turn it into a showplace. Damn, at least we ought to be mustering every resource to provide housing for exiled families.

Didn't Jesus say that as you treat the least of these, so you have treated me? I don't know how these pseudo-Christians can look themselves in the mirror.

Gonna be a judgment, that's a fact. A righteous train rollin' down this track . . . -- Bruce Springsteen
