      Your logic is impeccable!

But see, for example, this 1960 interveiew with nuclear phsycist Leo Slizard, in which, among other things, he notes:

Q: Do you feel that President Truman and those immediately below him gave full and conscientious study to all the alternatives to use of the atomic bomb?

A: I do not think they did. They thought only in terms of our having to end the war by military means.

I don't think Japan would have surrendered unconditionally without the use of force. But there was no need to demand the unconditional surrender of Japan. If we had offered Japan the kind of peace treaty which we actually gave her, we could have had a negotiated peace.

And this comparison of Kennan's Long Telegram and NSC-68, which shows how fundamentally the two superficially similar documents differed from one another.  In particular, it's worth noting that the multi-lateral, predominantly soft-power perspective of the Long Telegram was what actually ended up winning the Cold War, despite the fact that it was conducted primarily in terms of the unilateral, militarist framework of NSC-68.

In the end, Lou Reed did more to win the Cold War than any general ever did.

        The Gospel according to Paul.

But what does that have to do with whether the Soviet Union was an Evil Empire or not? Or whether  Truman made the righr decison?
