Clinton's charm and wit won the election.

nor a 50 state strategy will be able to help a candidate lacking in charm or wit.

One thing the Republicans recognize is that the presidency is a team... and you need an attractive candidate to front the organization.

Now, I don't find W attractive... but lots of people did.

Alternatively, another skill the Repubs have is being able to show off their candidate in their most appealing light. Is Bush practically incapable of intelligible speech? Focus on carefully groomed still images. Show him with a halo of light behind him. Make him a head on Mt. Rushmore. Land him on an aircraft carrier.

There's a great video of Al Gore that Spike Jones made that should have been visible in 2000 - it went a long way to humanize Gore and undermine the "stiff" and "wooden" characterization. But we don't do well at getting those images into peoples' consciousness.

When the MSM shows clips of "angry Howard Dean", where were the clips of him as a doctor, treating children?  Hardcore Deaniacs saw them. No one else did.

Once Democrats were the media-savvy ones. FDR and JFK knew how to project images of strength and vigor... even from a wheelchair and a back brace. We need to do a whole lot better.

So, even if you were to accept that the grassroots aren't the answer, but we need to rely on a top-down priesthood of Begalas... they've sucked at packaging their latest batch of candidates.

          Don't mourn. Organize.
