(Well, i do sound tech work for a local band, but that's different...)

But i've seen this sort of behavior before. "Hmm, what should we get? Oh, this is super expensive, therefore it must be good!"

"Appropriate" is not in their vocabular... I mean, just look at the rest of this event! :)

I had a creative director sell a client on a round stage that rotated, but he failed to ever really do anything with the rotation in the creative plan so the client was a bit irritated.  The whole thing was saved in the end by a creative stage manager (who was a loon) who figured out some stuff at the last minute so no one could compain that it was never used, but it was still obviously overkill to the client in the end.  I imgaine it was the gear guys selling it in.  That is usually how it works when they get a "live one"...  Then again, I have also had clients absolutely insist on stupid stuff and against all counsel make us integrate it no matter how stupid it is.  The other possibility is the screens were purchased (and this one is very possible) and one of the big wigs took those plasmas home after the show...

All kinds of weirdness.  If you have Pat Robertson funneling cash from his charity into his personal diamond mine, the last option seems like the most likely to me.
