Maybe. Sometimes how a diary gets recommended is timing. There are likely more eyeballs reading at 2pm on a Monday, than 10:30 pm on a Sunday. You're catching the afterwork crowd on the East coast at 2pm, etc.

The duplication was possibly because of the race to diary combined with selective tagging. Jerome's first tag was Cato. I suspect that is what he searched for and not finding your diary: Cato Institute: OMG, Higher Taxes Results in Less Spending!!! that has the tags: taxes and deficit.

Lastly Jerome seems to usually attract a strong reaction and following. This alone may seem like a double standard, but then I never really understood popularity or what it takes to be so.

    Just my 2 bits.

And I don't begrudge him that, at all.  He's worked hard to get his props.  Rather, its the annoyance that when the same issue, same article, same analysis in one diary gets lots of huzzahs and nary a peep of critique while the other is criticized as hogwash merely because of the identity of the diarist.  I think it just goes to show how often little thinking actually goes on around here at times.

Approval of the diary, some questioning of Cato's conclusions.  I see plenty of kudos in your comments and some "what is Cato thinking" here.  Yeah, Jerome gets a lot more notice with a similar diary but that's just the way it goes.  You're right that he got a lot more reading and thinking than you did but we all have limited attention and time and have to direct it at things we expect, before reading and thinking, will have value.  If you write a good diary almost every day for two years you'll get the notice too.
