    Gore wouldn't be smoking what his consultants were smoking.  

    Besides, last time, the dynamics of the campaign -- pre-9/11, everyone arrowing in towards the center, prescription drugs for seniors being the defining issue -- I don't think Gore would need to work anywhere near as hard as last time to distinguish himself from his opponent.  All he has to do is step up and deliver the kind of galvanizing rhetoric he's been giving us over the last five years.

    I really do believe that.  My friends think I'm crazy, that it would be a gift to the Republican nominee, but I think Gore is precisely what this country needs right now.
