  •  Wow, DarkSyde... (4+ / 0-)

don't hold back, tell us what you really think!

So sad, so outrageous, and so true!
Your essay reads like Dylan's "Masters of War" put into prose.

      •  Cannonfodder they called it (6+ / 0-)

Now it's called the all-volunteer Military.

What it is is class separation. If you serve, you are subservient, you are cannonfodder.  Even those coming from the "upper classes" who serve become subservient.

Charlie Rangel gets it. He calls it by its' rightful name, "modern day slavery". At least that is the attitude conveyed by those who temporarily lead this country. His proposal for universal service - no exceptions - is a righteous one.  He has stated over and over that universal service does not mean just military service.

It means that every child, as a part of the maturation process, earns his or her right to a place in this country, this society, by serving 2 years.  His bill to re-instate the draft is just one element of his ideal. Additional venues of service might include healthcare, the Peace Corp, and the Civil Conservation Corp.

If you want to end wars like this one, place in harms way the children of this country's leaders. If you want people who understand what war is all about, elect those with that experience in their background.

DarkSyde's iteration of those who lead, those control the message and their messangers is the greatest proof that universal service needs to be implemented.

        •  Take it to ist logical end (0+ / 0-)

The book "Starship Troopers" (not the movie!) has a logical end to this - citizenship comes from service.  It was written early in the cold war and would send chills up the spines of the current crew bcause it would strip them of everything for not serving.

It is well that war is so terrible -- lest we should grow too fond of it. Robert E. Lee
