  •  'National Greatness' is the problem! (10+ / 0-)

This notion of "National Greatness" is the sine qua non of neo-Conservative foreign policy.  We aren't a "great nation" unless we can dictate international relations.  We aren't a "great nation" unless all citizens are united behind a vision of the United States as God's Chosen People.  We aren't a "great nation" unless we have no rivals, unless our cultural values are (at best) first among equals; diversity is great, up to a point.

"National Greatness" was the excuse for supression and oppression of the Native Americans.  It was the driving force behind the Spanish-American War.  It is "bring 'em on" and Top Gun.  It is a dangerous impulse that must be restrained to the extent that it is tolerated at all in a liberal society.  A "liberal vision of foreign policy" should not be based on nationalism and exceptionalism, and that is exactly what a "vision of national greatness" is.
