There's a fundamental problem here: Republicans are better at being Republicans than Democrats are. In Beinart's world, the Democrats will portray themselves as "competent Republicans' when it comes to invading other countries in the name of the never-ending "war on terror." That means, however, that society will still be afflicted by the "disease" of being vulnerable to Republican-demagoguery when it comes to national defense.

Yes, on balance, during a Democratic administration adhering to Beinart's ideas, the USA would be in a better national security position vis a vis Iraq than it is now-- the symptoms afflicting us at the moment would be alleviating. However, the United States would still be willing to fall into the trap of another Iraq-style mess when the next Republican administration came along.

Beinart's prescription will inadvertantly turn the "War on Terror" into another "War on Drugs" or "War on Crime" where no politician is capable of supporting policies that would actually help things, because politicians are locked into an arms race of who is better able to seem "tough."

So has does Beinart propose ensuring that the USA never allows another incompetent Republican demogogue to take advantage of the American people when it comes to dragging us into an unnecessary, incompetently-executed war?
