  •  Then that get's quoted by Matthew (0+ / 0-)

....who puts it in quotations. And even there, where it was second hand, it was clear to me that he was referring to the dicsiples (clergy) not the poor. Unpaid clergy are the rule for Quakers. Ben Franklin said any minister that can't support himself isn't very convincing. Thanks for the reference!

    •  matthew who? (0+ / 0-)

not the author of the gospel.  while the gospel may have been composed after the epistles, it wouldn't have had jesus quoting paul.

or do you have a cite i've missed?

      •  Oooops - Jet lag got the worst of me there! (0+ / 0-)

That passage got stuck in my head because I started looking up Hal Lindsey quotes in the Bible to see how out of contect they were, then I started reading the New Testament front to back.

That's what comes from being up all night with 7 h jet lag in a hotel room with a Gideon Bible and laptop. Nothing like the good old days of sharing a suite at the Willard with Charlie Sheen and Marion Barry.

        •  hey no prob (0+ / 0-)

we seem to be the only one on this comments thread anyway. i can hear the crickets chirping...

if you can scrounge up a copy of the unvarnished new testament (translated by andy gaus) i highly recommend it for your front-to-back read.  no verse numbers though, but that makes it more readable.

          •  I've got a few interesting books (0+ / 0-)

"The Five Gospels - What did Jesus Really Say?" is nice. The red letter editions are cool. A lot of best stuff is written by rabbis.  As I like to tell my Bible Belt aquaintences - "There is a name for people that really read the Bible - they are called the Jews"
