  •  Develop? How about we STOP HURTING THEM? (5+ / 0-)

The people of this hemisphere aren't just standing around waiting for the USA to tell them to develop.

A HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE step forward in the peaceful and democratic development of Central and South America and the Caribbean -- and a great way to reduce the pressures for their citizens to flee -- would be for the U.S. foreign policy establishment to just stop hurting these nations and their people.

I mean, look at the difference between the countries which are able to pursue a strong and independent agenda and those which are beholden to US establishment pressure:  Argentina and Venezuela, two dramatically different countries, are undergoing amazing growth and quality of life improvement, and share only that they have completely abandoned US pressure and advice.

STOP using force and bribery to make these nations adopt trade and tax rules which are harmful to their development and their people.

STOP using international loans and / or 'humanitarian' aid as a giant lever to get nations to adopt policies preferred by certain foreign investors and corporations.

STOP interfering in these nations' elections and democracy, whether by funding political parties and candidates, or by funding ideologically slanted media, or by covertly corrupting election procedures and buying votes, or by threatening these nations with retaliation if their citizens vote against what the US foreign policyestablishment prefers.

STOP destabilizing governments and favoring tyrannical forces when a government insists upon acting in its own interests rather than subjugating itself to the desires of the US foreign policy establishment.

Again, NONE of these people in the US foreign policy establishment speak for me, and they have done me and my country NO FAVORS by harming and slowing the development of my neighbors.

      but not for the USA.

The double standard on America's force feeding of free trade to other countries, while rebuking it at home, seriously needs to be address.

      •  And subsidies, and corruption (0+ / 0-)

There's no reason in the universe, other than politics and corruption, that we should be paying Florida sugar growers to keep inefficiently produce sugar when we are not allowed to freely trade with Cuba and other, more efficient sugar producers.

Somehow I bet we could find some other productive uses for those billions and billions of subsidy dollars in ways which created a lot more job than these inefficient sugar farms.

The point of these 'free trade' agreements are mainly about removing trade policies from the hands of governments, which could change and thus could change trade policies, and into the hands of corporate- sponsored unreachable 'trade authority' officials.

So it's in part about freeing up capital & investment, and partly about destroying democracy.
