Is whether people got an education, not whether it is a good one.

The US is starting to lag badly behind other countries, especially in terms of match and science. You can't just look at the percentage of kids we churn out of high school and think "hey we're doing pretty good" you need to compare the actual abilities these kids have vs their counterparts in other countries.

We used to have a huge edge in this area, and it's slowly being eroded away.

think it is propaganda from the outsourcing corporations that we begin to believe.

I heard this all the time about computer professionals: that there are no people with the training and  experience like those in other countries. It is completely untrue. This is used to justify either importing cheap professional labor, or to offshore, when absolutely excellent professionals are out of luck and work. My husband is in this field, so I know a bit about it.

I currently see many extremely bright young people, who I know will be heading to MIT, Cal tech, Berkeley engineering, etc. They are incredible. If I may brag, my oldest child, for example is taking a HS enrichment course at UC Berkeley in robotics this summer. Her friends are taking advanced chemistry there, going to science camp for a month, etc, etc, etc.

We are training some really excellent kids in this country.

But will they have jobs when they get out? I don't know. Maybe they will have to move to India or China, with the corporations.

It is the corporations which are abandoning us, not vice versa.

Again, I think there is a strong dose of propaganda in all this. There have always been "know nothings" in America, while at the very same time, we achieved beyond anything ever before accomplished.
