  •  You don't have to use Shaw as your ISP (0+ / 0-)

    So you do have a choice.  

    •  Choice of ISP on cable in Canada, not US (0+ / 0-)

      Bear in mind that Shaw is in Canada, where cable companies are required to provide access to unaffiliated ISPs.  So you can have Shaw cable and get a different ISP across it.

      American law is different.  Cable companies have never had to allow third-pary ISPs on their cable.  There have been some special cases, like some Time-Warner merger conditions that got Earthlink onto some cable systems.  But in general, one ISP per cable.

      Cable telephony provided by the cable company is not part of their ISP service, and doesn't touch the Internet.  That's why it works better.
