  •  The VRA doesn't expire until next year. (0+ / 0-)

they would like to revamp it this year so that they can brag about it in their campaigns, but they don't have to do it this year.

Though the south objecting is pretty outrageous (and I like the suggestion to apply it to all states equally), the fact that they aren't reauthorizing this year isn't outrageous.

    •  pardon me? (0+ / 0-)

they specifically cited southern state politicians' objections to their states being monitored...

do you want to edit your comment before you start a blog swarm like what happened to that other commenter?

      •  I don't understand. What's to object to? (1+ / 0-)

I said that the south objecting to the VRA is outrageous and it is. But the VRA doesn't expire until next year - it's still in effect for this year. If they don't re-authorize next year, then we have a big problem. The only reason it came up this year is because the Pubs wanted to use it as a campaign issue. They cannot use their objection to it as a campaign issue nearly as effectively as they would have been able to use getting it reauthorized in one piece - as it's played out, it just reinforces the perception of rightwing racism.

        •  thanks for clarification.. (0+ / 0-)

..thought you were minimizing what repubs are doing...

          •  It's suspicious to me... (0+ / 0-)

When ever did the Republicans have the black and hispanic voters' best interest at heart?  Their actions are very questionable to say the least in this situation.

"Sorry... I don't *do* Republicans." The new abstinence!
