absolutely right. that is the tactic employed. suggest to the media, constantly, that this will happen. it makes the tactic itself, rather than the negative attacks therein, the bigger story when it does.  continually inspire the media to report what is really happening, and then to the extent the media does (which they won't unless constantly pressed)  the story to mainstream America becomes not susskind's alleged flaws, but the fact that the far right is running from the facts, just like they alwqays do, by demonizing, villifying, and trying to mislead and manipulate America on the substantive issues by appealing to our worst emotions and biases.

Relatedly, this very short piece links to some pretty incredible documents (including that PDB) and surrounding facts, that was largely ignored by the media, and that indicate the adminstration paid almost no attention to this issue despite a growing intelligence awareness (and in fact, several warnings including from no less than outgoing National Security Advisor Sandy Berger) of the dire need to do the opposite.

Also, on Iraq, noting also that the administration focused on it almost from the get go (to the exclusion of al-Qaeda), rescuing this diaryon how the Iraq situation may become a political as well as foreign policy pitfall...

More like "Alright, you've covered your ass, now I can go fishing. (Being a preznit's hard work!)"

Sorry, I just think LIHOP is a really dumb conspiracy theory.  I really think Bush & co. just "misunderestimated" the Al Qa'ida nuts because they were too busy trying to find some other excuse to invade Iraq, fix (as in "rig", not "make better") the nation's energy policy and future elections, and bring on the Rapture or whatever.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that these guys were probably evil enough to think along the lines of "if there's another USS Cole type thing, then we can invade Iraq, and if not, we always have those 'mobile weapons labs' and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi boogiemen to scare people with when the time is right."  Which is not a huge distance from LIHOP, but the "gone fishin'" explanation makes a lot more sense to me than that the "Bush Crime Family" (through their Skull & Bones connections? LOL) had some super-secret advance knowledge of 9/11 that the CIA, NSA, etc., didn't know about (or did know about but it's so super-duper secret that none of the disgruntled whistleblowers from those agencies knew about it either."  Maybe W's mommy called up OBL on his sat phone one day and told him her son needed a war so please go do some terrorism pls k thx.  And OBL just happened to have this plan that his buddy KSM had all worked up but as much as they all hated America (and N.Y. and Jews and Israel and everything else), they would NEVER have thought of the idea on their own until Bush came along (all those attempts during Clinton's admin notwithstanding)...

Oh yeah, and Paul Wellstone and Vince Foster were the only guys who knew and that's why Bush had Wellstone killed by, uh, tampering with his plane, and Hillary Clinton had Vince Foster killed because of... whoops, wrong nutty CT.  We can play the paranoia game all day, LOL, but it's rarely the clearest lens through which to see the universe from my experience.
