Today, to what should be their shame, several of TX representatives helped to table the renewal of the Voting Rights Act.

Even as the Supreme Court considers the redistricting case that was flagged by the Justice Dept for violating the VRA, Rep John Carter (R-Round Rock) claimed "I don't think we have racial bias in Texas anymore."

Tell it to the innocent victims of vicious racial profiling in Tulia. Or to James Byrd’s family.

This Act must be renewed. Not only are the wounds of bigotry still fresh, they are recurring. The remedy of law must be available if healing is ever to be permanent.

The real question is how long decent Texans of all races will be misrepresented by the organized indecency of this Republican leadership.

I pray it will not be past November, 2006.
