Most common in War Vets and Sexual Assault Victims, but can happen to anyone who suffers trauma. Marked by panic attacks, flashbacks, and sometimes is comorbid with MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). It's something that is just now starting to be addressed when it comes to vets. To my knowledge, treatment is not covered in their VA benefits. (Please correct me if I am wrong.)

Talking to vets around here, they have told us that the problem has been with a failure to diagnose things.  PTSD, DU, and other ailments, that should be checked for, aren't being screened.  This is a failure that must be remedied so soldiers get the treatment they need.  Being a Doc, this is of immedieate concern to David Gill.

He was in Vietnam.  He frequently wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, has flashbacks and other problems that I've not been told about.

This, as you can imagine, has put enormous strains on his family relations.  PTSD and proper care for our vets, as well as proper health-care for everybody, is a social issue and a family values issue.

PTSD strains family relationships.  Having to work excessively long hours to pay for medical care hurts family relationships.  Until we have national health-care, these issues will continue to harm families.

Among the members of John's advisory group is Ilona, a nationally recognized researcher on PTSD.

        PTSDCombat is her blog

The issue problem affects a huge number of those who served in Viet Nam and all wars since.  It is expected that those who served in Iraq will experience PTSD much more severely than any previous group.

Ilona is writing a book on it right now.  We partnered on one proposed PTSD project.

Has PTSD himself & runs the program effectively in Kansas.

What Dale didn't tell you is that he, too, has PTSD.  He told me that he found one kid 6 weeks ago with what we call the 10,000 yard stare.  (That describes exactly these guys appear. Generally, most are near suicidal or homocidal.)

After Dale took him to a VA Hospital twice and he was seen by 2 different doctors - neither of whom seemed to give a flying fuck - Dale paid for a flight out to Kansas.  A veteran out there picked him up & now Doc has him in his program.

The out-rage:  VA Administrators are hiring doctors who are screened politically and ideologically.  They want Republicans who do not believe in socialized medicine.  My source: a VA Patient Rep who retired after 29 years at VA as a nurse, 28 years as a nurse in the Illinois National Guard (Retired as a Colonel), and only 4 months as a patient rep.  She couldn't stand what is passing for medical care in some areas.
