    ... that Roberts and Alito declined to join Thomas and Scalia.

    Alito hints that he might be willing to join their anti-Buckley camp if the right case presented itself. Perhaps it is noteworthy that Roberts did not join Alito's concurrence. Or, perhaps we are just reading tea leaves.

    Still, based on this outcome, it seems unlikely that any future campaign finance case would be decisively decided by the current SCOTUS lineup.

    Any district judge who has to try and apply this SCOTUS muddle to a pending case has my sympathies.
