    tens of thousands are estimated to die prematurely each year from the effects of particulates from coal fired electrical generating plants. IIRC, millions of work and school hours are lost each year to asthma, and aggravation of COPD type diseases.

    The emissions also contribute to acid rain, acidifying lakes and streams, damaging trees and crops .. it even causes all sorts of trouble to building materials, vehicles .. {even a Republican that cares more about things than people should get upset!}.  

    Technology exists virtually stop this pollution; but it costs money.
