    David,

This made me do a double take:

    • The American Journal of Public Health reports more than 1,700 African Americans die each week because they don't have the same access to health care as other Americans.
    • The Institute of Medicine reports 346 Americans die each week because they lack health insurance

    Eh?

My initial reaction (I've just dropped it, upon further inspection) was one of "what do you mean African Americans don't count as Americans??!"  note 1700 A-A die each week vs. 346 Americans die each week.

My more considered reaction is: What is different in the studies here?  Either way, one of them is making a different statement...either 346 Americans (African-Americans included) die each week because they don't have insurance or MORE than 346 Americans die because 1700+ African Americans die from a lack of access to healthcare.

    Any thoughts?

The first study on African Americans isn't only about uninsured, but its also about underinsured and lacking access to a certain level of care. The second study is just about people who have no insurance at all.

I figured that was what it was...but it wasn't really clear that the studies had different targets (recall the initial reaction that made me ask the question!)

Thanks!  It's discrpancies like this that make me regret I have a full time job (wait....I think lightning is about to strike me)...simply because I can't spend the time to really read/internalize/analyze/etc.!
