but fortunately SusanG found it and shared your work with us. :>)

Memories of Kent State were seared in me forever when, as a small child on my knees in front of a television, I watched the Guard shoot down the students. It's a replay in the mind that never fades.

    People matter.

Coded language...flattens the unthinkable and renders it almost ordinary. It is the flattening of what is repulsive so as to sanitise it ......episodes in history are far too often encapsulated in a single repeated photograph of such dramatic power that it silences everything else, yet leaves us with a perilously shallow understanding of what took place behind it... our tendency to iron out our qualms so that we collectively acquiesce or collude in something of which we should be ashamed.

    Thank you.

why I have always hated that picture of Mary Vecchio standing over Jeff's lifeless body. While that is most certainly a very powerful image -- and almost certainly why the event had such an impact on the American psyche -- it doesn't tell us anything about what really happened. For all you know looking at that picture, he could have committed suicide. I much prefer the pictures of the guardsmen shooting or even the really horrific pictures of Jeff showing the true extent of his injuries. (Sorry, I don't seem to be able to find one of those at the moment ... but, then again, I doubt you'd really want to see it.)
