I really am ticked off about this.  We have a lot of work to do.  I got the most recent links from the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition web page, which is excellent.

      The Corporation.

if not, i'd recommend renting it. really. you're stating a classic case here, imo.

we still haven't had the Al Gore movie yet either.

But we did get Michael Moore's Farenheit 9/11 Documentary.  I went to a packed house and people cheered at the end.  So I have hopes.

We taught a course based on WalMart in my department to the Freshman as part of a critical thinking seminar (my colleague selected the text).  And I team taught a course based on Fast Food Nation.  That was great.  And we did a course based on "The Demon Haunted World-Science as a Candle in the Dark: by Carl Sagan.  Source of my best lecture ever on the placebo effect, goat glands, Wizzard of Oz and origins of Coca Cola and the Goat Gland Doctor and the Aerican Medical Association.  Probably would make a good diary. The class is called Connections and we try to connect science and society while teaching them public speaking, critical thinking, research and writing.

The Corporation. As quickly as possible.

BTW, the course sounds perfect! What I wouldn't give to be able to teach something like that ...

        •  where do you teach this? (1+ / 0-)

Sounds fascinating. Just the kind of intellectual stimulation our young people need. Bravo.

Sad subject but excellent diary. You should launch a campaign to rename it the "Friends of Global Warming Bowl".

as mentioned in a link below.  I am in Integrated Science and Technology, and this is an amazing class.  We have the same format most years and change the topic.  It is based on the book "Connections" tying history of science together.  We mostly explore current issues- and students write their research paper as a grant proposal to get them to think about designing an experiment to assess how risky something is.  It is a good format- they review the literature and then propose a study.  A lot of science is common sense and even freshman can propose some pretty robust research strategies.

I went to see more local festival stuff this weekend and missed it.  Son appeared in 1776 in Ashland.  Now that is a surprisingly relevant musical and was very well received.

This story just makes me feel dirty.  The pictures are absolutley devestating.  It just makes you feel sad that we do this to nature.  All in the name of a few more lightbulbs in Atlantic City.

Great story on the bowl game.  It amazes me that they didn't bother to get bids.  naming rights are so common that many firms specialize in them and know exactly how to get maximum dollar.  No-bid is obviously not the way to do it.  Now, WVU and Marshall won't get the attention of Ohio State-Michigan, but those two schools were able to get $530K PER SCHOOL.  This will be a great rivalry.  $75K doesn't seem like enough to get the naming rights for this game.

            Great diary!

...these are human rights issues. The labor and resources of these communities is mercilessly exploited, and the majority of theb enefits are not kept in the communities. In fact, coal counties are some of the poorest in the country.

...and economic issues. With tourism as a growing industry, strip mining and mountaintop removal stops any kind of long-term sustainable local economic development.

Selling out too cheap will really resonate here.  Selling out is what everyone seems to have to do to get by.  I agree that the price is very low- because this game will get a lot of air play.  People enjoy inviting the WV teams to bowls since we all show up and fill the seats.  Game will sell out- tickets are being rationed now to season ticket holders and students are upset.
