    we try to connect science and society while teaching them public speaking, critical thinking, research and writing.

    Sounds fascinating. Just the kind of intellectual stimulation our young people need. Bravo.

    Sad subject but excellent diary. You should launch a campaign to rename it the "Friends of Global Warming Bowl".

      as mentioned in a link below.  I am in Integrated Science and Technology, and this is an amazing class.  We have the same format most years and change the topic.  It is based on the book "Connections" tying history of science together.  We mostly explore current issues- and students write their research paper as a grant proposal to get them to think about designing an experiment to assess how risky something is.  It is a good format- they review the literature and then propose a study.  A lot of science is common sense and even freshman can propose some pretty robust research strategies.
