Randi Rhodes is a scary good entertainer.  And that is how she advertises herself -- as entertainment, comedy and political opinion.  Her show is easily the best on Air America for that very reason.

    But yes ...

She is just as outrageous as Rush Limbaugh is.  Why not, though?

and I don't disagree with Lee's characterization of her as "a left wing version of Rush Limbaugh" - with the significant exception of simple honesty: Randi's got it and Rush hasn't.  But part of the pleasure I take in Air America generally and Randi (and Mike Malloy) in particular is this: I believe that some of Rush's fans are fans not out of ideology but rather out of "style" - they have an outrage aesthetic.  If we can offer them that same aesthetic with a better viewpoint, maybe we deflate the hot air baloon that keeps the Republicans aloft.

I don't want to make too much of this - I think most of Rush's fans are with him at many levels, and I don't think many of them vote anyway - but I think this is part of the service Air America is doing for our country.

      •  My biggest problem with RR is one of honesty (0+ / 0-)

I don't really care for her agressive and confrontational style, but tastes vary. I realize that many people do like that sort of thing.

What really drives me up the wall about RR is the way that she misrepresents facts with the same types of flourishes that RL uses. She is quite adept at both cherry picksing and burning down strawmen. And in pursuing that strategy the truth is left behind.

          Yes.

But I kind of think of it as a dialectic.  You don't have to argue the other side's points.  They are doing that already.  You only really need to hit your own points and I think that Randi Rhodes does that very well.

I think an objective fact-checker, if such could be found, would rate RR one hell of a lot higher on the honesty spectrum than RL.  Is she telling a slanted story?  You bet.  But I don't think you get any out-and-out falsehoods from Randi, and I'm pretty sure I've heard her issue corrections when she made a mistake.  I don't spend a lot of time listening to the fat drug-addled chickenhawk, of course, but I'd be surprised to learn that he ever issues corrections, and I've heard some real whoppers; my (largely second-hand) understanding is that falsehoods are simply routine on Rush's show.

          •  I can't stand listening to either (0+ / 0-)

Given ten or fifteen minutes listening to either RL or RR, I'll spot a distortion or misrepresentation so large that it qualifies as an untruth. She really is that bad. I will concede that Randi is far better than either Michael Savage or Ann Coulter. But so is Rush.

I don't think that Randi (or Rush) intentionally lies. Rather I think they're both bullshitters par excellence. Following Dr. Frankfurt's examination in On Bullshit, tauroscatology is defined by disregard for for the truth. The liar cares about what the truth is and attempts to hide it. But the bullshitter simply doesn't care what the truth is so long as he or she wins the argument. Rhodes and Limbaugh both seem to me to fall very much into that category.

            •  Do me a favor? (0+ / 0-)

Go for it, please.  Pick an arbitrary 15 minutes from an arbitrary show of each and identify the bullshit.  I'd do it myself, but I know I can't be objective.  I would be very interested to see your results.  Thanks!
