It is strange -- I grew up there (left about 15 years ago), and still have some friends and ex-colleagues there.  They do not blame Bush, and basically blame the city and the poor people for not getting out (there has been an editorial circulating on e-mail supposedly from a black preacher who blames black men for letting their families down).  Of course these folks are affluent whites who had transporation, and are borderline racist anyway.

How I came to have friends who think this way is a whole 'nother story.

I would have gone back if the Convention was to be held in New Orleans.

We were not treated as citizens of the USA, plain and simple.  Now, Nagin has pulled a disappearing act, on the road making speeches.  His nickname is Na-gone.  We are on our own as always.

      •  That's a funny nickname ... (0+ / 0-)

Did not hear Na-gone until now.  That's too bad -- I heard that after he got elected, he was starting to make some good reforms.

And I really feel for those of you still down there. It is going to be a tough road back. I agree that there was failure across the board by governments.  The folks I know down there refuse to blame the Feds at all (even one I know who is a vocal Dem was relatively complementary of the Feds, if not of Bush).
