    of journalism.

The American system does not provide for a press. In modern circumstances it logistically prevents a press serving anything beyond niche markets.

much of it is just a write-off PR/propaganda expense for Corporate America.

    •  Real information is enormously valuable to (5+ / 0-)

the elites and professionals of the country.  This probably doesn't support general journalism, but there definitely people in this world that would pay quite a lot for relevant facts on the ground.

Plus, there is also one element to recall:  Economic viability is not the same as profit maximization.  It is the latter that often seems to lead to the race-to-the-lowest-common-denominator, to mix my phrases.

But, in the current business model of having mass audience advertisements to support the reporters, then yes, there is not much market for deep insights into the world.  Most will accept a random smattering of facts and parameters of an account ("who got bombed today?").  Also, this is far cheaper to produce than to sit back and synthesize past events to provide any kind of context to what has happening.

For example, don't be horribly surprised to see a commissioned officer from the current Isreali offensive to be prime minister some day.
