    They had been trying to open up surrender talks through the Swiss embassy before we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.  They saw the Soviet Union gearing up to enter the war against them and knew the jig was up and it was time to get the best deal they could before they lost whole chunks of Japan to the Soviet Union.

      The Japanese insisted on the retention of the Emperor.

      We bombed.

      They kept the Emperor.

      We picked up the tab for Japanese defense in the post-war era and they developed economically.

      They'll change the Constitution soon and begin to expand their military.

      And we'll still be the only nation to have used nuclear weapons.

      Who won?

      •  I meant the Japanese witnessed the horror (0+ / 0-)

        of nuclear war first hand.  When Hirohito surrendered, his people were overwhelmingly ecstatic.  They were sick of war.

        But I'm afraid now the Japanese won't be so adverse to a military build-up.

      knew the Russians were coming in, we ignored the Japanese attempts to negotiate surrender and nuked them anyway so they would surrender to us instead of the Soviets.
