Why don't those interested in diversity begin a separate scouting group?  It seems like there are a lot of people who ignore the official positions taken by the BSA, yet they still remain part of the system.  It's a private system.  It's a system of choice.

The one thing worse than a press that is "out of control" is one that is under control.

The main point of Scouting is (was?) to provide a social structure for young men in which to learn how to integrate, unconstrained by issues of ethnicity, class, etc.  The organization is inclusive by nature and by Baden-Powell's design.  Nobody is really excluded from it, including females, who are actually encouraged to provide instructional/counseling roles within the organization.  Sort of hard to join something by militating against it.

The anti-gay thing can be traced to the spread of rabid evangelism, IMO, porbably resultant from preacha Bob's realization that he could join a troop and find new places to stick his penis. Seriously.  The church pedophiles always seek new meat....

When I was completely active in the BSA, in the early to late 1980s, homosexuality presented no stigmata.  Sexuality of any persusasion simply wasn't even discussed; we had other things to do.

Which translated means that if a scout came out or were exposed as gay, he'd be drummed out.  So they didn't come out, and because they were scared to be perceived as such, it was hard to expose them beyond the usual childhood name-calling.

Oh, and it's "stigma."  If it were stigmata, you'd have Catholic prelates scratching their heads over how miracles were being visited upon such sinful types.

With the declining interest in Scouting I doubt a new "progressive" organization would be able to make much of a dent.  A few people would have their kids join, but it would end up being a bunch of geeks and even less "cool" than it is now.  A good idea, but it would never come close to the level of the BSA
