    His message was "the people vs. the powerful," and as long as he held to the message, he did all right.  I remember the immediate trashing he got by RNC tongue-waggers after the convention speech, which is becoming a cable news tradition: after Kerry's speech, Judy Woodruff just about had an aneurism claiming that the lack of falling balloons was a harbinger of doom for Kerry's campaign.  They all claimed that it was excessive wacko-left firebrandism, but the fact is that every time Gore distinguished himself from his opponent that election, his numbers improved.

    As I recall, Gore did better than all right in that post-convention honeymoon.  In fact, pontificator, I think he actually got a substantive, 6-10 point bump that lasted for several weeks; it was only around the time of the debates that I really remember that lead being erased.

    Correct me if I'm wrong!  I'm gonna go google those polls now... :-)
