They withdrew from Labanon before and really didn't want to have to deal with it again.  Hizbullah wasn't dismantled as the resolution called for and now they're defending themselves.  They are going to leave Lebanon.  Those people can go back and rebuild their homes.  It's not ethnic cleansing. As for Gaza, they left there as well.  Did the people work to build a better place for themselves?  No, they lobbed rockets into Israel.

Let's say that your crystal ball is right on this one:

      that result in the displacement

      Whoops, that didn't change anything...

      •  a buffer from Hezbollah (0+ / 0-)

the goal is to weaken Hezbollah enough so that Lebanese Army can move in.

        •  If that was the plan shouldn't (3+ / 0-)

they have talked with the Lebanonse government first? I think IDF underestimated hizbollah and now they don't want to fully go in, they want someone else to do the dirty work....another civil war, just like they promoted one in Gaza. Don't these guys have any other plays?

    •  rebuilding Beirut is pointless since (7+ / 0-)

Since Hezbollah can just slip away with the civilian population and come back if people rebuild in Beirut.  This is exactly what happened with the Taliban in Afghanistan.   Israel will bomb it again.  We've seen this movie before with the prior Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Any buffer zone means that people of Southern Lebanon are ethnically cleansed.   Otherwise Hezbollah comes back.

Endorsing buffer zones will mean the buffer zones have to get bigger over time as Hezbollah's rocketry get better.  Pretty soon they will have to be 50 or 100 miles which means more ethnic cleansing.

The only way to justify destroying Beirut is to say the lives and rights of Lebanese are a far less valuable than those of Israeli's.
