    that ethnic group specifically for hateful reason.

    The word's origins were in the aftermath of the death of Tito, where ethnic identity groups waged war upon each other with the intent of creating single ethnic regions.

    I don't think that's what is going in Lebanon but it may just be too early to tell.

    It seems to me that Israel is pluralistic and that the Palestinian refugee problem is fairly more complex than a 'ethnic cleansing'. Also, since the attack of Lebanon is not an act of hate against the Lebanonese but of (self proclaimed) self defense, the charge of 'ethnic cleansing' seems hard to support.

    It is a serious term and should not be used casually for fear of diluting the meaning (a la terms like 'collateral damage').

      But I don't think that's a requirement--as you can see from this analysis, the precise definition is somewhat fuzzy, but I believe that Wikipedia's definition is a good starting point--perhaps a good minimal requirement as well--especially for people who are totally unclear on what it could mean in the first place.
