    •  Not to belabor mentaldebris' point (9+ / 0-)

but just to make sure you get the whole deal with tips, the tip jar isn't only saying the diary was

      an extra good diary

but actually has a real value in the world of this blog.  Each member of dkos builds up a point total (mojo) that can lead to TU or trusted user status.  You build up that mojo by getting your diaries and comments recommended and by rating the comments of others -- in other words, by regular participation.  TUs earn the ability to give troll ratings for comments that don't meet community standards and the ability to read the comments that have been hidden because they have been troll-rated off of diaries.  This is one of the key concepts of this site and allows it to be mostly self-policing.  You can read all about this stuff in the faqs.

The problem with posting a tip jar for others, as mentaldebris noted, is that you end up collecting recommends toward your own mojo.  These recommends are, in actuality, tips that you are stealing from the person for whom the tips were intended.  If you already knew most of this, please forgive the longwindedness of my comment.  I thought by your excuuuse me comment that perhaps you didn't have the whole concept yet.  You are far from the first person who, with every good intention, posted a tip jar for another.  Don't sweat it.

One more thing -- you don't keep TU automatically once you get it.  You can go in and out of TU based on your participation level.  I do it all the time.

Unintentional misuse of a tip jar is not something you would get banned for.  Banning doesn't happen often, I can only recall it happening once, and the users who were banned were able to email the site owner to be reinstated.  Individual diaries can be deleted by ... just go to the faq page and read all about it.

Getting fours (the same as recommends) is good.  The exact formula for becoming a TU is intentionally not known so people don't spend all their time trying to get to TU as quickly as possible.  Just keep participating, that seems to work best.  There is much more in the faq.

          •  Read all that and more in DKospedia (0+ / 0-)

Plus all the diaries for beginners.  But I AM a little slow, so thanks for your help.
