    That the key phrase for me.  Traditionally, Republicans looked out for the rich; and Democrats looked out for the regular guy.  Then Democrats (Johnson) strayed and got stuck on the poor.  Whether the focus is rich or poor, either way, the regular people in the middle get stuck with the bill.  If the redistributed wealth goes too far up for too long, people will begin to identify with the "poor" and eventually support Democrats.  If the redistributed wealth goes too far down for too long, people eventually identify with the "rich"  and support the Republicans (Reagan Democrats).  As I said, the key phrase for me is "regular people".  A large and successful middle class is the "key" to a strong democracy.
