Don't you know that squirrels are the spies who communicate with the rest of the animal world about what we are doing? ;-P

I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. -Voltaire

That explains the tail flicks - secret semaphores. Ah - Secret Squirrel! Now it all comes into place. The cute faces, squirrelly antics, all a ploy to get close and observe. And they eat nuts like they grow on trees.

While eating from your hand or running up your leg is common in wild squirrels, one did something no one had ever heard of. I could pet and scratch him anywhere but the top of his head. Squirrel people who saw the video were amazed, claiming it wasn't a wild squirrel. And some long-time rehabbers say they've never gotten wild squirrels to even approach, so I feel lucky. Park squirrels are different as they grow up knowing how to manipulate you and mooch treats.

The one pictured above will let me stroke his leg a couple of times, but that's about it, no tummy scratches. That's my favorite picture as it looks like he's talking (mouth open, rarely seen) and he's looking right at the camera, so it lends itself to captions. :) Down with ponies, up with squirrels!
