The views expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of the 1-102 Infantry Battalion, CTARNG, the Department of the Army or the members thereof. (disclaimer in the paper)

On what basis does the newspaper have the right to assume that the Guardsman's views "do not reflect" the views of the battalion or others?
It's customary for these sorts of disclaimers to state that expressed views do not necessarily reflect the opinions of others.  Categorically stating it as a fact is an entirely different matter and, IMO, clearly misleading.

What I'd like to see is a response by Lieberman which carries the disclaimer that "the Senator's views are solely his own and do not reflect the views of the majority of Connecticut residents."  THAT would be factual.

endorsements, or show any interest in politics. It is a good system. When they say

do not reflect the views of the 1-102 Infantry Battalion, CTARNG, the Department of the Army or the members thereof

they mean the battalion as a military entity, not the individuals in it. And the "members thereof" means that the person who signed the letter is speaking for himself, not the battalion as a military unit. If others in the battalion had wanted to sign the letter or write one of their own, then they would have. That sort of disclaimer is standard when printing letters from military personell.

that you familiarize yourself with the DOD rules and regulations governing the political activities of military personnel.  Without this disclaimer, this young soldier could face a court martial.  It is against military regulations to attend a political rally in uniform....let alone write a letter of a political nature for publication with the return address of one's military unit.
